Who the course is for

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing (Top-up) is designed for students who have already completed a Level 4 qualification, such as the HNC in Software Development (HTQ), and are ready to build advanced technical and professional computing skills. 

Whether you’re looking to progress into higher-level employment within the digital sector or continue onto degree-level study, this course provides the opportunity to deepen your understanding of modern computing technologies and software development practices. 

You’ll explore more advanced areas of computing while developing the project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills required within the industry. The course is designed to reflect current employer needs and emerging technologies, helping you prepare for careers in software development, systems analysis, cybersecurity, networking, and other digital specialisms.

How you will learn

You’ll normally attend college 2 to 3 days a week, with additional reading, research, and independent study expected outside your timetabled sessions. Learning takes place through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, and project-based activities delivered in supportive small-group environments by experienced teaching staff. 

The course places a strong emphasis on independent learning and professional practice, helping you develop the skills expected within higher education and industry settings. You’ll work on realistic computing projects, apply technical knowledge to practical scenarios, and build confidence in research, teamwork, and problem-solving. 

Assessment is varied and designed to reflect workplace practice. You’ll complete coursework, presentations, practical assignments, reports, and both individual and group projects. Some modules may also include time-constrained assessments or demonstrations of practical skills.

Progression

The HND in Computing can support progression into a wide range of careers within the computing and digital industries. Graduates may progress into roles such as:
