Entry requirements
View The Isle of Wight College's standard entry requirements for full-time college courses (depending on the level of the course to be studied).
The qualification is accessible to everyone. We are looking for a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard. Two GCSEs to include English, maths GCSE at below grade 3, however we generally start all learners at level 1 to build the hand skills and bench/tool skills to then progress to the level 2 programme. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate that high levels of attendance will be achieved.
Who the course is for
This course is for those wishing to embark upon a career in Wood Occupations, which may include site carpentry or bench joinery.
What you will learn
You will study 6 theory and 6 practical Units : Carry out safe working practices in construction. Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others. Knowledge of building methods and construction technology. Knowledge of basic woodworking joints. Know how to maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools. Know how to prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
How you will learn
This programme is delivered through a combination of classroom theory and a predominance of practical skills development. Much of the curriculum deliver is based on the college campus but we also carry out some projects within the community.
You will be assessed through Practical and Theory based assessments both in the classroom and workshop. Completion of workbook.
Theory test – Online, multiple choice questions Practical, Phase test.
Progression
Progression onto level 2 Carpentry and Joinery.
There are opportunities for Carpenters all over the United Kingdom. Employers range from small businesses to large organisations. In large companies there may be opportunities for experienced carpenters to become team leaders or supervisors. Some experienced carpenters become self-employed and set up their own businesses.

City and Guilds Certificate in Construction Skills Carpentry and Joinery
Additional information
You will be required to wear PPE, including safety footwear and work trousers.
All practical Carpentry and Joinery tools and equipment will be provided.
