Who the course is for

This course is ideal for:

  • School leavers aged 16–19 who are looking for a fresh start in a creative subject.
  • Learners who may not have thrived in traditional academic settings.
  • Anyone interested in developing their confidence, communication, and creative skills through hands-on learning.
What you will learn

You’ll explore a wide range of creative techniques and processes, including:

  • Drawing and painting
  • 2D and 3D design
  • Digital art and image editing
  • Visual storytelling and idea development
  • How to plan and present your creative work

You’ll also build essential employability skills such as time management, teamwork, and problem-solving.

How you will learn

Learning is practical, engaging, and project-based. You’ll work on creative assignments in a studio environment, supported by experienced tutors and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). You’ll also:

  • Take part in group critiques and peer feedback
  • Use industry-standard software and materials
  • Receive personalised 1:1 support and tutorials
  • Build a portfolio of work to showcase your skills
Work placement

While a formal placement is not required, you’ll have opportunities to develop work-related skills through:

  • Live project briefs
  • Guest speakers from the creative industries
  • In-college exhibitions and showcases
Progression

After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:

  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design
  • Other Level 2 creative or vocational programmes
  • Supported internships or entry-level employment in creative fields

  • BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Art & Design
  • GCSEs in English and/or Maths (if required)

  • Location: On-campus in our dedicated art and design studios
  • Equipment: All essential materials are provided, but you may wish to purchase your own sketchbooks or tools for personal use
