Who the course is for
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design Practice is aimed at students who wish to study a broad-based art and design course with an emphasis in the design areas of the industry. You will need to be innovative, creative and motivated. You will need to have an open mind and be prepared to explore and experiment within the confines of a structured but flexible course.
What you will learn
You will be working in a mature, creative and exciting environment of art and design at The Isle of Wight College. You will study in a purpose-built art design and media block, with up-to-date facilities which include spacious multi-purpose studios and an industry equipped Apple Mac Suite. Building from the core units, through set projects and direct guidance. You will be prepared during your first year to start to take more responsibility over your educational direction in the second year. Year 1 has two units, the first is skills development, and the second allows you to develop your own project through a set theme. Year 2 again two units, the first is about personal progression, if you want to go to university we help you apply and support you through the process. You may want to set up your own online business, look at apprenticeships, hunt job opportunities or even plan a gap year. All these options are covered. The final unit is what we call the final major project, your write your own brief and then implement it.
How you will learn
Practical and theoretical work is integrated throughout the course with individual project work forming a large part of your studies, supported by workshops, lectures, demonstrations and tutorials.
Work placement
There may be opportunities to take on an industry placement with local companies. The department has excellent links to local industry and we have a range of work experience opportunities available to students to enable them to enhance their skills and knowledge of the industry. You will get the opportunity to work to live briefs for external clients and to develop your technical, communication and production management skills.
Progression
A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma develops learners’ skills and understanding of work within a vocational context. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas offer direct progression on to BTEC Higher National programmes and Higher Education degrees. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas are recognised by Higher Education institutions and attract a maximum of 168 UCAS points at D*D*D*. We support you with careers advice, CV production and application to both jobs and Higher Education.
