Overview of Role:
Painters and Decorators operate in domestic and commercial properties and undertake the decoration and protection of buildings. Properties include houses, schools, offices, hospitals factories and construction sites. Working internally or externally they work individually and/or as part of a team applying water-borne and/or solvent-borne paint coatings and wallcoverings. They have good knowledge of paint coatings and wallcoverings and understand and comply with statutory, safety and environmental requirements. They are responsible for their own work achieving a high quality finish at the appropriate pace. They are good problem solvers and communicators and are able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients and associated trades.
Entry Requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements but each employer might state their own requirements.
Duration:
The apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete. However, this may be reduced if the apprentice is part-qualified on entry.

Delivery:
Apprentices will complete work-based learning and will be paid a wage, gaining valuable knowledge and experience. In-house training will be provided by the employer with an Assessor visiting and supporting in the work place. This apprenticeship includes 1 day a week in college for the technical knowledge and practical skills delivery.
Qualification:
Apprentices without Level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 English and maths prior to taking the end point assessment.
Assessment:
The apprenticeship will end with an End Point Assessment (EPA). This measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed.
The End Point Assessment consists of:
- Knowledge test
- Skills test
- Professional discussion
Career Progression:
Upon completion, apprentices have often been promoted in their company to roles with more responsibility and within a short period of time some have gone on to become managers and even company directors.
