In order to be considered for a Level 3 qualification English & Maths at Grade 4 is essential.
A recognised Level 2 qualification in Automotive or significant Automotive trade experience.
Candidates who are looking to progress their journey into the world of vehicle diagnostics.
The L3 Diploma is broken down into the following core modules
- Units from Level 2 Diploma
- Customer Service in the Automotive Environment
- Knowledge of carrying out Non- High Voltage Operations on, Near or With an Electric Vehicle
- Diagnosis and rectification of; Engine, Chassis, Electrical, and Transmission,
- Wider Skills and Knowledge (E.g. Employability, Equal Opportunities etc)
- Maths and English (Learners with Grade 4 or above will not have time tabled classes, but will still be working on these skills within vocational classes.
- Theory classroom-based lessons
- Practical lessons based in the Motor Vehicle workshop
- eLearning/self-study and tutorial
All learners will either complete work-based skills in college or in an Industry related placement
Ideally, following Level 3 Diploma, an Apprenticeship (keep your eyes peeled for opportunities).

A City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (7290-13)
- PPE & Uniform is required for this course, and learners will not be allowed into the workshop/classrooms without the following
- College Polo shirt and work trousers – not jogging style trousers or jeans.
- Safety footwear, (steel toe-cap boots),
Automotive use The Wight T-Shirt Company in Newport for all its uniform and this can be bought directly from them. Simply go to Wight T Shirt and say that you are a Motor Vehicle student and what level you are on as the colours change per level.
You will also need a copy of 'Level 3 Principals of Light Vehicle Technology' by Graham Stoakes) Heinemann, 2012).
Don't forget, if you are eligible for a college bursary, this will cover the cost of these.
