This 31 week GCSE programme is suitable for those who require a GCSE in English at grade 4 and who already have a solid foundation of English which can be built upon in order to achieve a successful outcome in the GCSE exams.

You will be required to complete an entry test to a high standard to assess your suitability for the course and to identify skills gaps.

GCSE English is suitable for students who wish to progress to further study such as Access to Higher Education, or for those who plan to study at degree level, as the great majority of universities now expect applicants to have a good GCSEs in this subject. Good levels of English skills are also extremely valuable when seeking employment.

What you will learn

This course will encourage candidates to develop:

Understanding of the spoken word and the ability to express themselves effectively in a variety of contexts, such as giving and asking for information and taking part in debates.

The ability to read, understand and respond to a variety of writing and the ability to describe, explain and argue with clarity and precision.

How you will learn

Our weekly 3-hour GCSE English class is held on site at the college main campus in Newport.

You will have access to a variety of resources outside of the classroom and you will be expected to undertake considerable self-study in order to prepare for the May/June GCSE exams.

Attendance to all sessions is essential.

You will sit two exams which are externally assessed by Edexcel (Pearson) at the end of the course in May/June. Results for these exams will be issued in August.

Fees
Free if you don’t already have a GCSE (Grade 4/C or above) in English. Fee waivers may apply if you’re on a low wage or claiming benefits. Approx. £400 if not eligible. Eligibility checked at enrolment.
