Entry requirements

View The Isle of Wight College's standard entry requirements for full-time college courses (depending on the level of the course to be studied).

Minimum of four GCSEs grade 3/D or equivalent including English language and Maths

For progressing students, a minimum of Level 1 course in your chosen subject at Merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2. Progressing students without English or Maths at GCSE grade 4/C will be required to study these as part of their programme of study.

Who the course is for
This course is ideal for students who are passionate about hair, beauty, and media make-up and are looking to begin a creative and exciting career in the beauty industry. It’s suitable for anyone interested in working in salons, on photo shoots, film and television sets, or in freelance make-up artistry.
What you will learn

You’ll develop a wide range of practical and creative skills in:

  • Client care and communication

  • Health and safety in the salon

  • Applying day, evening, and special occasion make-up

  • Hair styling and dressing techniques

  • Shampoo and conditioning

  • Media make-up for film, TV, and photography

  • Creating total looks for events and themed occasions

  • Body art design 

How you will learn
  • Theory/ Workshop sessions - Here you will receive all the essential underpinning knowledge related to the subject area. These sessions are for delivery and demonstration of the practical skills of your qualification
  • Salon practical sessions - These are designed salon sessions in which you will gain confidence in working in a real salon environment, working on peers, family and friends

As an essential part of learning all students will be expected to receive and complete treatments (unless medically exempt) within the practical sessions from peers.

Full time learners will complete E-learning and Tutorial sessions

  • Tutorial Sessions - These are designed to support your individual academic progress, and to monitor your course progression by way of action planning and review 
  • E-Learning - This session is a computer based class where you will use technology to produce work and study independently, with the support and guidance from your tutor. Please note E-learning will be competed at college.
Work placement
Full time level 2 and level 3 students will complete work placement as part of your qualification and will be organised and arranged by the college.
Progression
  • Level 3 in Hair and Media Make-up
  • Apprenticeships in Beauty or Make-up artistry

  • Junior Make-up Artist
  • Beauty Counter Consultant

Qualifications you will get
Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make Up Studies.
Additional information

All students are required to:

  • Wear a course uniform (purchased by yourself via the college)
  • Wear full black covered shoes
  • Present yourself in a professional capacity, relating to industry standards
  • Have hair fully up and off the face for all sessions within the salons
  • Wear no jewellery (a wedding band can be worn)
  • No nail extensions or nail polish. 

Practice of treatments at home on friends and family will be an essential part of this qualification.

All students studying at the Isle of Wight college will carry out treatments on external clients/models. This vital experience will prepare you for employment and working in beauty-related industries. Watching demonstrations and carrying out treatments on clients, as well as each other, is also high on the learning agenda

You will be required to wear a uniform in the Hair and Beauty salons

If your course requires a kit, you will be expected to purchase one to support your learning. More information on this will be given to you at your induction
