Our Animal Care & Management students enjoyed an informative visit from Bird Aware Solent and their Coast and Country Canine division, gaining valuable insight into the importance of protecting local wildlife and coastal habitats.
During the session, students learned about the migratory birds that visit the Solent each year, exploring why these remarkable species make the journey and the vital role the area plays in supporting them during the winter months. The visit highlighted the challenges these birds can face and the simple actions that people can take to help minimise disturbance and protect their habitats.
The students also discovered more about the work carried out by Bird Aware Solent and the Coast and Country Canine team, whose efforts help raise awareness of responsible behaviour in coastal areas and encourage the public to support local conservation initiatives.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of wildlife conservation, habitat management and the importance of balancing public enjoyment of natural spaces with the protection of vulnerable species.
A huge thank you goes to Penny and Louise from Bird Aware Solent for sharing their expertise, experiences and passion for conservation. Their engaging presentation inspired our students to think about the role they can play in protecting local wildlife and preserving the Island's natural environment for future generations.
Experiences like these are invaluable in helping students connect their studies with real-world conservation work, while developing a greater appreciation for the wildlife that makes our local area so special.
