Who the course is for
This course is ideal for adults aged 19 and above, who own a DSLR camera and want to move beyond the automatic mode. Whether you're a beginner or looking to build on basic skills, this course will help you explore photography as a creative outlet and develop your own visual style. No prior formal training is required—just a DSLR camera and a passion for capturing the world through your lens.
What you will learn

Over the course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of DSLR photography, including:

  • Manual settings: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they work together

  • Exposure control and lighting techniques

  • Composition and storytelling through imagery

  • Exploring genres such as landscape, portraiture, still life, and abstract

  • Introduction to photo editing and image critique

  • Drawing inspiration from the Isle of Wight’s UNESCO Biosphere and unique natural beauty

You’ll also be encouraged to find your own photographic voice and begin building a portfolio of work.

How you will learn

The course is taught through a blend of practical sessions, creative challenges, and group discussions. You’ll learn by doing—experimenting with your camera each week, both indoors and outdoors around the college campus. Constructive feedback and peer sharing will help you refine your technique and artistic direction. This is a non-qualification course, focused on enjoyment, skill-building, and creative development.

Progression

On completion, you may wish to progress to more advanced photography courses or digital editing, or explore other creative evening classes at the college such as printmaking or art. You’ll also leave with a strong foundation for building a personal or professional photography portfolio.
