Who the course is for

This course is intended for students who wish to develop a broad foundation in photographic practice before progressing to specialised undergraduate study. It is suitable for individuals exploring photography as a potential academic or professional pathway, including those with limited prior experience.

The programme supports learners who are motivated to build technical and creative skills, engage critically with contemporary visual culture, and develop a portfolio that reflects both experimentation and emerging personal direction.

What you will learn

The course establishes a strong foundation in photographic techniques, digital workflows, and critical thinking, while fostering experimentation and cross-genre exploration of Fashion, Documentary, Editorial, and Fine Art Photography.

Students are introduced to the core principles and practices of each photographic field, engaging with the cultural, social, and ethical significance of the medium and considering how photography both shapes and responds to contemporary society. By working across multiple photographic pathways before choosing a specialism, students develop informed perspectives that prioritise equality, diversity, and inclusion, alongside the technical and professional skills essential for the industry.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the diagnostic year, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an informed understanding of the practices, histories, and contexts of Fashion, Documentary, Editorial, and Fine Art Photography.
  • Apply foundational technical, digital, and creative skills relevant to contemporary photographic production.
  • Generate and develop original photographic concepts through research, experimentation, and critical reflection.
  • Recognise and evaluate cultural, ethical, and social perspectives that influence photographic practice.
  • Employ inclusive, innovative, and contextually appropriate approaches to visual storytelling.
  • Produce a portfolio that evidences exploratory, developmental, and resolved photographic outcomes.
  • Identify a preferred photographic pathway for progression into specialised undergraduate study.
How you will learn

The module is delivered through a combination of studio and location-based practice, technical workshops, lectures, and seminars.

Throughout the year, students will collaborate, rotate through genres, and undertake self-directed projects, equipping them with the flexibility, adaptability, and resilience required for a career in photography or progression into a specialised undergraduate degree.
