Entry requirements

Applicants will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 4-9(A-C) or above including Mathematics, English and ideally Science  All candidates need to produce references and to be successful at interview.

OR must;

Have obtained a Level I electrical qualification, and have also achieved or are working towards Functional Skills in English and Maths at level 2, or have completed a Level II Basic Skills qualification in English and Maths or equivalent.

Or must;

 Students who cannot fulfil the listed requirements above will be invited to undertake a screening assessment to ascertain their current working level of functional skills. A review of this assessment will take place and successful candidates will undertake a 6 week trial period on this course. At the end of this period a final decision will be made in consultation with the candidate as to the suitability of the candidate for this course

Because of the practical content of the course, general hand skills and hand/eye co-ordination are essential. Applicants must declare any difficulty with colour perception, as employment opportunities may be restricted

Who the course is for

This qualification is ideal for those candidates who have gained some on site electrical experience and wish to further their career or candidates who wish to enter the electrical industry

What you will learn

The Level 2 (2365)City and Guilds  Intermediate Diploma in Electrical Installation. It is a college-based learning qualification. (Full time students will also be undertake work experience in conjunction with this course). Your course will be centred on developing the skills and knowledge required to become a practising electrician. Subject areas will include the requirements of BS7671 in relationship to domestic, commercial and industrial installations. You will learn the latest industry practices and techniques and this will be developed in both the classroom and workshop environment. Other areas for development will be of a scientific nature and will include the principles of motors. Generators, single phase and three phase theory.

How you will learn

The course is a combination of practical and theory workshops. Attendance is 2 day per week for part time students and up to 4 days per week for full time students. In order to gain the full qualification you will be required to complete two practical assessments normally completed over a three to four day period together with four external City and Guilds examinations.

Progression

Opportunities exist to proceed to the Level 3 City and Guilds 5357 (this is dependent upon an apprenticeship and adequate work based evidence to support the N.V.Q. assessment)

You will be expected to provide yourself with:

  • The IET On-site guide to the wiring regulations (BS7671 18TH edition)
  • Calculator, writing materials, 2 number A4 folders.
  • The basic Electricians tool kit consists of the following:
  • Electricians Cutters    (VDE rated)
  • Electricians Pliers       (VDE rated)
  • Wire Stripping Pliers  (VDE rated)
  • Screwdriver Set (to include):
    • 3.5mm Flat Blade Screwdriver (VDE rated)
    • 4mm Flat Blade Screwdriver (VDE rated)
    • 5.5mm Flat Blade Screwdriver (VDE rated) 
    • No 1 Pozi - Driv Screwdriver  (VDE rated)
    • No 2 Pozi - Driv Screwdriver  (VDE rated)
