Raquel, one of our Student Governors, was short-listed for Unloc’s nationwide Student Governor of the Year Award.
Having grown up in Portugal, Raquel moved to the Island to study Level 3 Extended Diploma Forensics & Criminal Investigation. Amongst her other achievements, Raquel has been a student governor for two years and a key member of the college’s budding Student Executive. Raquel embodies the spirit behind one of the conference themes: “Don’t be a passenger”
The event was hosted at Burberry HQ, right in the heart of London: very corporate, very glamourous, very cool. All the speakers were inspirational, prompting students to reflect on the people who influenced them and to think about the legacy they want to build. Student governors shared their experiences and were reassured to discover they face the same challenges. They also enjoyed energetic workshops about building confidence and improving communication skills.
Raquel really threw herself into the programme and made connections with people from across the UK:
“It was incredibly inspiring seeing everyone else's achievements. It both motivated me for my future endeavours, as well as giving me a sense of comfort meeting others with similar roles to mine. All the guest speakers were amazing.”
Raquel is a very special person: her enthusiasm and professionalism are something to be really proud of, and she recognises how much college has helped her grow and prepare for her next steps. Raquel starts her degree in Biological Sciences at Bournemouth University this September.
