The Isle of Wight College proudly hosted a thrilling day of mathematics yesterday (5th February 2025), as learners from across the college gathered to participate in the Further Education Maths Challenge. This national competition, organised by MEI (Mathematics in Education and Industry), aims to inspire students resitting their GCSE or working on Functional Skills qualifications by showcasing real-life applications of maths through creative and challenging problems.

The event proved to be a huge success, sparking excitement and teamwork across all levels. Competitors formed pairs and competed in three categories based on their current maths levels, namely: Funkies (Grade 1), Ein2Steins (Grade 2), and Go Forth (Grade 3). Each challenge tested learners' problem-solving, logical reasoning, and mathematical application skills, requiring them to think critically under timed conditions.

Here’s a breakdown of the top achievers from each category:

Funkies (Grade 1)

  • 1st Place: Elliott Stewart & Liam Cox – £20 voucher each
  • 2nd Place: Bobby Hope & Blake Bruce Daly – £10 voucher each
  • 3rd Place: Tommy Hyton & Jack Day – £5 voucher each

Ein2Steins (Grade 2)

  • 1st Place: Lottie Morris & Lenny Njenga – £20 voucher each
  • 2nd Place: Tyler Pickett & Logan Phillips – £10 voucher each
  • 3rd Place: Ethan Hunt & Jerick Morales – £5 voucher each

Go Forth (Grade 3)

  • 1st Place: Matt Dean & Ciaran Morey – £20 voucher each
  • 2nd Place: Alesha Woodmore & Elisha Pemberton – £10 voucher each
  • 3rd Place: Leona Ram & Lily Roy – £5 voucher each

This competition is more than just about winning prizes. It’s designed to encourage students to engage with maths in new and exciting ways, demonstrating how mathematical thinking can solve complex, real-world problems. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for learners to build confidence, collaborate with peers, and develop critical skills that will support their academic and professional futures.

The atmosphere at the college was fantastic, with students cheering each other on and staff providing support throughout the day. Photos from the event capture the excitement, teamwork, and determination that made the challenge a memorable experience for everyone involved.

About the Challenge

The Further Education Maths Challenge, organised by MEI, is part of a broader initiative to support students who may struggle with traditional approaches to mathematics. It aims to break down barriers to learning by promoting innovative, engaging, and practical ways of understanding maths. By participating in this challenge, students develop a sense of achievement and realise that maths can be both rewarding and enjoyable.
