Entry requirements

View The Isle of Wight College's standard entry requirements for full-time college courses (depending on the level of the course to be studied).

4 GCSEs at Grade D/3 or above including Science, English and Maths.

BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Applied Science with Functional Skills at Level 1.

You are expected to be at Level 1 in English and Maths. If you do not have a GCSE in English you will be given to opportunity to take this. Before you join the course you will take an initial assessment to determine your level.


Who the course is for

Our BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science provides a route into continued education in science. This course combines the key areas of Biology, Physics and Chemistry to give you a well-rounded practical and theoretical understanding of the Applied Sciences. 

You will take part in a range of laboratory practicals, developing an understanding of common practices in laboratory settings. You will also have the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths open to you and find out about how you can pursue various careers in the wide world of science. 

What you will learn

This course offers students the opportunity to study science and to progress to a wide choice of courses at level 3. You will study a range of science subjects, together with some specialist options.

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Energy and Our Universe
  • Biology and Our Environment
  • Chemistry and Our Earth
  • The Living Body
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection
  • Exploring Our Universe
  • Investigating a Crime Scene
  • Practical Scientific Project

You will also work towards improving your English and Maths Skills through a GCSE or Functional Skills.

How you will learn

You will be taught in a variety of ways including lectures, practical work, group and pair work as well as self-directed study. Assessment will be by assignments, presentations, observation of practical work and practical lab written reports. Each unit studied will use one or more of these assessment methods.

Progression

This is a full time Level 2 Applied Science qualification. It develops student’s knowledge of science and a progression route into the Applied Science (Applied, Forensic or Medical Science) or any other Science related course at Level 3 such as Engineering, Health and Social Care or Sport.

However in order to be recommended to go onto these courses you must show your teacher that you are up to Level 3 work by submitting high quality assignments by the deadline
