In order to carry out the Level 2 Plumbing qualification a GCSE in Maths and English at 4 or above is essential

Who the course is for

Start your career in plumbing - learn how to deal with leaky pipes, water systems and drainage. A qualification in Plumbing will help you learn the trade. These qualifications are intended for those wanting to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the plumbing industry. At Level 2 this consists of a competant level of learning and skill development gained through enhanced hand skill learning and theory sessions with highly experienced tutors.

This course consists of 9 exams that occur over a one year period, so attendance and hard work is part of the fun of learning and studying this course. 

What the interview will involve

You will be sent a career plan prior to your interview date to complete and bring along with you on the day. The interview is a two-way process which will give you the opportunity to discuss the course and suitability with the subject tutor.

  • Unit 202/502 Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering  
  • Unit 203 Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing   
  • Unit 204/504 Common plumbing processes  
  • Unit 205/505 Cold water systems  
  • Unit 206/506 Domestic hot water systems  
  • Unit 207 Sanitation   
  • Unit 208/508 Central heating systems  
  • Unit 209/509 Drainage systems  
  • Unit 210 Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering

As well as other Plumbing related units 

How you will learn

You will be taught in a variety of ways to include workshops, lectures and seminars whilst also undertaking work experience, to help support and underpin the theoretical knowledge gained in class.  

This course is offered in conjunction with Functional Skills and GCSEs for English and Maths where required.  Please be aware of the importance and requirement for maths and english, the core skills of plumbing use ratios, algebra, area and perimeter. English skills for writing quotation, CV's and invoices. The tie in with GCSE Maths and English and industry is exciting and you get the opportunity to get this at college.

Work placement
As a part of your course, you will be required to complete 36 hours of work experience. This is with one of our amazing network of employers that we are lucky enough to work with on the Island. Alot of these companies will of come through the Isle of Wight College to begin their own journeys.
Progression
After the completion of this course, learners can progress to the industry or look to gain apprenticeship and return for the Level 3 which covers either Natural gas or an Environmental pathway. There is also the opportunity to apply for the Technical Level 3 Qualification if you cannot get an apprenticeship.

Additional information
  • PPE & Uniform is required for this course and learners will not be allowed into the workshop/classrooms without the following
  • Work trousers or overalls – not jogging style trousers 
  • Safety foot wear, either boots, shoes or trainers 


    The college uses IDML in Newport for all its uniform and this can be bought directly from them. Simply go to IDML and say that you are a plumbing student and what level you are on as the colours change per level.
