You must have a passion for working with Animals and the outside world. This will help students to gain the skills to move on to their chosen pathway 

Who the course is for
For students who may hold low level GCSE/FS qualifications but are keen to start a career in animal care. The Level 1 Land Based Studies course is designed to give an overview of the industry, whilst studying alongside their GCSE English/Maths retakes, and are ideal for students who wish to progress onto Level 2 Animal Care.
What the interview will involve

You will be sent a career plan prior to your interview date to complete and bring along with you on the day. The interview is a two-way process which will give you the opportunity to discuss the course and suitability with the subject tutor.

  • Health and Safety 
  • Animal Health 
  • Animals in the Wild and Their Main Features 
  • Feeding and Watering Animals 
  • Animal Accommodation 
  • Handle and Restrain Animals 

 

How you will learn

Students work is based in practical skills, where they will encounter a variety of species in our onsite animal unit. They will also build on their theoretical skills, such as research skills and work readiness. 

You will often work as a group, so you should be able to get along with other people and also take some responsibility for getting on with tasks.The course will cover basic knowledge and important practical skills. To assist with this you will undertake a mandatory work experience placement which is usually one day per week.  

Literacy and Numeracy skills development is embedded throughout the course, as well as ICT skills.

Progression

The Level 1 Diploma course is a good precursor to the Level 2 Animal Care programme of study. Students may also take up employment opportunities in: 

  • Animal charities 
  • Zoos 
  • Kennels/catteries 
  • Animal technician 
  • Voluntary organisations

Qualifications you will get

Step-Up to Level 1 Land Based Studies (non qualification route) 

Level 1 Certificate or Diploma in Land Based Studies (each option has the opportunity to top up to the next programme)
