You must have a passion for working with Animals and the outside world. This will help students to gain the skills to move on to their chosen pathway
You will be sent a career plan prior to your interview date to complete and bring along with you on the day. The interview is a two-way process which will give you the opportunity to discuss the course and suitability with the subject tutor.
Possible units you may cover include:
- Health and Safety
- Animal Health
- Animals in the Wild and Their Main Features
- Feeding and Watering Animals
- Animal Accommodation
- Handle and Restrain Animals
Students work is based in practical skills, where they will encounter a variety of species in our onsite animal unit. They will also build on their theoretical skills, such as research skills and work readiness.
You will often work as a group, so you should be able to get along with other people and also take some responsibility for getting on with tasks. The course will cover basic knowledge and important practical skills. To assist with this you will undertake a mandatory work experience placement which is usually one day per week.
Literacy and Numeracy skills development is embedded throughout the course, as well as ICT skills.
The Level 1 Diploma course is a good precursor to the Level 2 Animal Care programme of study. Students may also take up employment opportunities in:
- Animal charities
- Zoos
- Kennels/catteries
- Animal technician
- Voluntary organisations
There may be a cost for purchasing equipment or uniform for this course. Find out about financial support available.
Step-Up to Level 1 Land Based Studies (non qualification route)
