Engineering Boatbuilder Apprenticeship

Minimum of 5 GCSE grades 9-4, including: English Grade 9-4 Maths Grade 9-4

Overview of Role:  

Boatbuilders build boats such as yachts, workboats and superyachts and/or refit and repair existing boats. Boats may be made of composites, metals or wood so a boatbuilder can work with and understand the capabilities of a variety of materials. They can read and interpret engineering and technical drawings to produce moulds, jigs, plugs and templates to create complex shapes using a variety of measuring equipment, machines and hand tools. ? 

Entry Requirements:  

There are no formal entry requirements but each employer might state their own requirements. This will likely include level 2 qualifications in English, maths and a relevant Science.  

Duration:  

The apprenticeship will typically take up to 48 months to complete, depending on prior skills and knowledge.

Delivery:  

Apprentices will complete work-based learning and will be paid a wage, gaining valuable knowledge and experience. In-house training will be provided by the employer with an Assessor visiting and supporting in the work place. Further training will be provided at the Isle of Wight College, depending on the needs of the learner and the employer. This method of delivery allows for a flexible approach which is tailored to each apprenticeship.  

Qualification:  

Unless already achieved, qualifications in level 2 English and maths must be completed prior to the completion of the apprenticeship. Level 2 and 3 diplomas in boatbuilding are also mandatory qualifications required for gateway, which will be delivered at CECAMM. 

Assessment:  

The apprenticeship will end with an End Point Assessment (EPA). This measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed. 

The End Point Assessment consists of:  

• Work based project(s) 

• Viva interview 

Career Progression:  

The learner will be recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) at ‘Engineering Technician’ level on successful completion of the apprenticeship. Learners will likely move to a supervisory or management position.
