Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4or above including Maths and English Language 

For progressing students, a minimum of Level 2 course in your chosen subject at Merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2. 

This course is only available to those aged between 16-19 or with a current EHCP. 

Who the course is for

This course is aimed at learners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of computing, with proven application in a “real world” setting. There is an emphasis on real industry experience and is equivalent to three A Levels. This course will develop your programming skills in a range of different programming languages. You will gain experience using industry standard development environments, techniques and source code management platforms. This will equip you to face real world programming challenges. Investigating different software design methodologies, modelling approaches and project management tools will allow you to build the skills needed for your own software development projects. 


You will learn about the value of digital technology and gain an understanding of customer and commercial needs. Discussions about the ethical and moral issues raised by the increasing reliance on technology and automation and the importance of legal requirements will form part of your studies. 

What you will learn

You will learn specialist skills for your industry in classroom-based environments, such as workshops. You will need to show evidence of your achievements and demonstrate your ability to work in your chosen industry. 

 

An employer-set project which will require you to apply your knowledge and skills to a set challenge.

How you will learn

You will be taught in a variety of ways to include workshops, lectures and seminars whilst also undertaking industry placement, to help support and underpin the theoretical knowledge gained in class. Digital methods of teaching and learning will be embedded to enable you to access materials at all times.

Work placement
An industry placement is required for this course. The placement is for a minimum of 315 hours. The Isle of Wight College encourages all students to find their own appropriate industry placement as part of the course. The college will also support students to secure a relevant industry placement if needed.  
Progression

From this qualification you could progress straight into employment or continue to a higher-level apprenticeship, degree or to the HND Computing

Students can progress into employment and work in roles such as:
