The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied. There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below. You will be required to have your own Windows based laptop ready for the first day of the course.You will be sent a career plan prior to your interview date to complete and bring along with you on the day. The interview is a two-way process which will give you the opportunity to discuss the course and suitability with the subject tutor.
The course is focussed on providing essential skills to ensure Readiness for the Workplace, and progression to higher levels of study. It has been endorsed by the Island’s Digital Island programme as part of their key priorities.
The course is structured around a set of project modules aimed at providing core knowledge and skills desired by employers.
The programme places a heavy emphasis on you getting the skills that you will need when you enter employment.
Preparatory Modules
These short modules are internally assessed and are designed to allow students to integrate into the Computing community. The outcomes of these units will be an important factor when progression options are considered.
- Fundamentals of Digital Technologies and System Fundamentals
- Principles of Software Development
- Cyber Security
Students will be entered for the Gateway Certificate in Digital and Creative Industries LV 2 with potential grades of Pass, Merit, and Distinction. It has an equivalent value to a full GCSE qualification.

You will be taught in a variety of ways to include workshops, lectures and seminars whilst also undertaking industry placement, to help support and underpin the theoretical knowledge gained in class. Digital methods of teaching and learning will be embedded to enable you to access materials at all times.

This course is offered in conjunction with Functional Skills and GCSEs for English and Maths where required. These qualifications aim to develop skills valued by employers.
This course can lead to entry to a level 3 course such as the T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development or the T Level Digital Support Services and may be of particular value in preparation for completion of an Apprenticeship programme.
If you are taking a full-time course, you will be charged a Central Admin Fee of up to £40 at the start of your course. In addition to this there will be a cost involved for purchasing any essential equipment or uniform for your course; you may be eligible for financial support from the college Bursary team, please ask your tutor for more information.
