Entry requirements

Qualifications equivalent to Level 3 amounting to 48-56 UCAS to include a minimum of 1 A Level at grade D or an equivalent qualification 

  • GCSE English and Maths grade 4 (C on previous tariff) or above or equivalent competency evidenced 
  • For international students, IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.0 with no component score below 5.5 
  • Application either through UoP on-line form* or via UCAS** 

HND Business at The Isle of Wight College is a University of Portsmouth Higher Education (HE) course 

Who the course is for
The 2 year HND course allows students to study Higher Education on the Island at an equivalent to the first two years of a full degree programme (with an opportunity to top-up on completion). Although full time, the course can accommodate students who may wish to continue in part-time employment. The HND offers the student a business education that is vocationally relevant and stimulating. Students will gain a nationally recognised qualification that will equip them for employment in the dynamic world of business or progression to further studies at degree level and above. It is likely that you would have just completed A Levels or a Level 3 Extended Diploma although applications are also welcome from mature students

The course content is subject to change to reflect the needs of employers and students. 

How you will learn
Attendance will normally be for 2 to 3 days a week with a requirement for reading and additional studies above the contact hours timetabled. Learning will be through lectures, group discussions and workshop activities in supportive small group environments with experienced teaching staff, alongside self-study. The course will employ a variety of assessment opportunities to include coursework, presentations and exams, with involvement in both individual and group projects. This will give students the opportunity to enhance and practice their skills in informal settings while competencies gained are designed to be fully transferable to the workplace. Assessment will be throughout the course with exams as additional assessment on some units.

Higher National Diplomas are valued by employers and can lead to a variety of career opportunities in areas such as management, sales, marketing and finance or, progression to further study to a BA (Hons) through direct entry to a level 6 study opportunity at University of Portsmouth or other Universities (part-time study options may be available) with an appropriate grade profile.
