Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.


A career in the Uniformed Services is very satisfying for those who enjoy working with people, or those wishing to study Uniformed Services subjects at a higher level.

This course will provide a realistic introduction to work in any of the Uniformed Public Services including: Fire Service, Police Service, Ambulance Service, Prison Service, Customs and Excise, Immigration Service, Coast Guard, all of the Armed Forces (Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.)

You will find the course stimulating as it combines classroom based study with outdoor activity and group work.  The different course units are aimed at developing the skills and qualities necessary to handle demanding but very rewarding jobs.


The NCFE Extended Diploma is made up of eighteen units, four mandatory units, plus fourteen optional units and is offered over two years.

The NCFE Level 3 Diploma is made up of nine units, four core (mandatory) units plus five optional units and is offered over one year.

All students take 4 mandatory units:

  • Prepare for a career in a chosen uniformed service
  • Equality, diversity & inclusion
  • Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services
  • Develop leadership skills

And 14 optional units:

  • Values & standards
  • Emergency planning and response in the uniformed services
  • Understanding discipline in the uniformed services
  • Understand conflict management and personal protection
  • Uniformed services hierarchy and routine
  • Volunteering in the uniformed services
  • Outdoor & adventurous expeditions
  • Crime scene investigation
  • Mental & physical wellbeing
  • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
  • The influence of UK government, international organisations and media on the uniformed services
  • Security procedures in the uniformed services
  • Carry out map reading and navigation across open country
  • Telecommunications in the uniformed services

Opportunities will be provided throughout the course to improve: Maths, English, Communications, Leadership Skills and to develop competence in the use of appropriate computer software. A residential period and a range of outdoor activities are essential elements.

Each unit of study is assessed by lengthy unit assignments, designed to test knowledge, skills and understanding. To be recommended for the NCFE qualification you must achieve a minimum of a Pass grade for all units.

You will study English and Maths GCSE/Functional Skills which are essential for employment in any job sector and for progression.

You will also undertake The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (Bronze or Silver) alongside the main course, the following sections will be covered:

  • Volunteering
  • Skills
  • Physical
  • Expedition


Your learning, supported by an experienced team, will consist of a balanced programme of task based learning and practical “hands on” activities. You will undertake research into the public services and case studies based on real events. Some activities will be carried out with the public services.

You will be required to carry out outdoor activities involving map reading, expeditions and overnight camping residential. There will be visits by various public services to the college and trips to observe public services in their own environment.


This course is recognised by, and will prepare you for entry into the Armed Services as well as the Prison, Fire, Ambulance, Police and other uniformed services. The course will also prepare you for study at higher levels, and attracts UCAS points for those wishing to progress on to University.


It is important for you to understand that uniformed services qualifications require a high degree of personal commitment and self-discipline.  Whatever you hope to gain from your time with us in terms of career development, personal development, social life and sports activities, the one objective that we all have within the uniformed service team is a desire for you to succeed.
