Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Theory and practical activities to cover 8 units.

  • Health and Safety
  • Scaffolding
  • Preparation of surfaces
  • Application of paints, brush, roller and spray
  • Paper hanging to ceiling and walls
  • Decorative effects, rag rolling, stenciling, marbling, graining
  • Efficient working practices
  • Relevant Functional Skills in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Protecting/masking surfaces and storage of materials

NOTE : The course includes one externally set examination to cover the units.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

As part of this course you will attend 1 lesson per week in one of the following subjects;

  • English
  • Maths

These classes will be with subject specialists and delivered at a level to suit you.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work placements and any work experience are highly desirable but subject to availability. All candidates are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to gain purposeful work experience during their course. It is not realistic for the College to be expected to find all trainees a placement, though we will do all we can to assist in finding suitable opportunities. The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 40 hours of work experience within their academic week.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

Practical and Theory based assessments both in the classroom and workshop and Multi-choice examination paper.

Work Experience

The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 36 hours of work experience within the academic week.

COURSE HOURS

Typical attendance is two  and a half days per week with additional self-study.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

Further study e.g. NVQ Level 2 Painting and Decorating or employment within the industry.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Essential Materials, Books and Equipment needed

You will be expected to provide yourself with:

  • Safety footwear incorporating steel toecaps (£30 approx.)
  • Bib and brace / overalls as protective clothing ( two pairs ) (£25 approx.)
  • Tape Measure ( 5 metre minimum length) (£8 approx.)
  • An approved set of Drawing Equipment (£35 approx.)
  • Calculator, Writing Materials, A4 Lever Arch Files, Paper (£15 approx.)
  • Recommended Books (£24 approx.)
  • Health and Safety Test New Registrations (£35 approx. included in exam fee)

PLEASE NOTE THESE FEES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

It is expected that all students will enter for the examination.

There will be an additional fee for returning students to top up tool boxes.
