Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The media industry is in an age of rapid growth with global communication networks bringing the digital age to every home.

The Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Creative Media Production (TV and Film) provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for learners wishing to enter upon a career in the media or progress to higher education.

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

You will have the opportunity to express your interest in the course, discuss any prior experience you have gained and show relevant portfolio work. You will be given an overview of the course, the units you will undertake and the nature of the assessment process. You will be asked about your long-term career goals and how you feel this course will get you there. At this stage you will also be able to ask tutors about possible progression routes and destinations for work or further study.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will learn about every aspect of television and film production and will be involved in a range of different projects throughout the course. The course will give you the skills and knowledge to take an idea from concept to screen and all the stages in between. Units of study include;

  • Single camera techniques
  • Multi-camera techniques
  • Music video production
  • Video editing techniques
  • 2D animation
  • Factual programming production techniques
  • Corporate and promotional film production
  • Idents for television
  • Producing video installation work

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The environment is like working within a professional production company developing high quality moving image productions to real deadlines. The course is based in the new Art, Design and Media building on the main College site. Facilities are of a high quality including dedicated digital video editing suites on both Apple Mac and PC based platforms running industry standard software and related packages. There is a purpose built TV studio with professional lighting rig, blue/green screens and vision-mixing equipment with the facility to stream TV shows ‘live’ to the internet. There has been heavy investment in industry standard kit including Canon and Sony digital video cameras as well as associated sound and editing equipment.

Practical and theoretical work is integrated throughout the course and moving image production will form a large part of your studies. Your studies will be supported with workshops, lectures, demonstrations and tutorials. All tutors have media related degrees as well as industry experience. The course has excellent links to the industry and students will have the opportunity to gain work experience as part of their studies. In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise in an area of moving image production through their choice of Production Management Project.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

A BTEC Level 3 Diploma develops learners’ skills and understanding of work within a vocational context. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas offer direct progression on to BTEC Higher National programmes and Higher Education degrees. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are recognised by Higher Education institutions and attract a maximum of 168 UCAS points at D*D*D*. This course has an excellent record of students progressing into Higher Education, and career development is an integral part of the second year of the Diploma.
