Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

PROGRESSION

Students who achieve a merit profile or above could apply for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Hospitality or a level 3 NVQ. Other students may progress to the 7100 professional cookery (practical).

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

The course is for people who want to pursue their careers in the catering industry and will be able to make choices, with the necessary qualifications to support those choices. The course will cover both front of house theory and kitchen skills, and various aspects of hotel and restaurant operations.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is made up of thirteen units – four mandatory core units and nine specialist units.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

Students will all study:

Core modules

  • Investigate the Catering and Hospitality Industry
  • Products, Services and Support in the Hospitality Industry
  • Principles of Customer Service in Hosp, LT&T
  • Providing Customer Service in Hospitality

Specialist units on the course are selected from the list below:

  • Planning and Running a Hospitality Event
  • Prepare, Cook and Finish Food
  • Alcoholic Drinks
  • Service of Food at Table
  • Accommodation Services in Hospitality
  • Hospitality Front Office Operations

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

A BTEC Extended Diploma at level 3 prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as:

  • Edexcel BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Hospitality
  • NVQ Level 3 in professional cookery or hospitality supervision
  • Employment at an operative level in Hospitality
  • Apprenticeship at level 3 in the work place

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Full Catering Uniform is required at approximately £250

Students may participate in corporate hospitality work experience with tutors at events such as:

  • Ascot Racing
  • British Bird Fair
  • Large scale outside catering events

Take the Opportunity to work on outside catering events around the Island.
