Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

PROGRESSION

This is an advanced level course.  Achievement at Distinction attracts 360 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A levels).

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

For those who are interested in a career in Hospitality Supervision and Management.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is made up of eighteen units – four mandatory core units and fourteen specialist units.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

Students will all study:

  • The hospitality industry
  • Principles of supervising customer service performance in hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism
  • Providing customer service in hospitality
  • Financial control in hospitality

Specialist units on the course are:

  • Supervisory skills in the hospitalityindustry
  • Food and drinks service
  • Alcoholic beverage service
  • The principles of food safety supervision for catering
  • Food service organisation
  • European food
  • Hospitality business enterprise
  • Marketing for hospitality
  • Personal selling and promotional skills for hospitality
  • Human resources in hospitality
  • Events organisation in hospitality
  • Planning and managing a hospitality event
  • Personal and professional development in hospitality
  • Industry-related project in hospitality

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

As part of this course you will attend one lesson per week in one of the following subjects;

  • Information and communications technology (ICT)
  • English
  • Maths

These classes will be with subject specialists and delivered at a level to suit you.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

A BTEC National Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as:

  • BTEC Higher National Diploma or Certificate in Hospitality Management
  • BTEC Level 4 Diploma or Certificate in Management
  • Foundation Degree in Hospitality Management
  • Employment at a supervisor level in Hospitality

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Full Catering Uniform is required at approximately £250

Participate in compulsory corporate hospitality work experience with tutors at events such as:

  • Ascot Racing
  • British Bird Fair
  • Large scale outside catering events

Take the Opportunity to work on outside catering events around the Island.

There are many well paid jobs for qualified individuals with worldwide opportunities.

Work in top hotels and restaurants, leisure outlets, corporate catering and the Armed forces. Many choices of employment including chef, restaurant manager, waiter, bar supervisor, food and beverage manager and hotel management.
