Entry Requirements:

Students should have the following:

Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3/D or above including Maths and English language

Art and Design courses may also require a relevant qualification in a creative subject.

Progressing students may require a minimum of Level 1 qualification in your chosen subject and English language and Maths at Level 1.

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

VTCT have a pre-requisite for the level 2 award in infection prevention which must be achieved as part of their main qualification. In some instances, there will be a registration fee of £20 which will be discussed within your induction

Applications which do not meet the stated entry criteria in full may be approved as an exceptional entry, based on a review by the Assistant Principal

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This qualification’s structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career path as a junior barber.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Cut facial hair
  • Cut men’s hair

PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION

ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO:

  • Wear a course uniform (Purchased by yourself via the college)
  • Wear full black covered shoes
  • Present themselves in a professional capacity, relating to the industry standards

CURRENT LEGISLATION IN RELATION TO CLOSE CONTACT WORKING

Full PPE must be worn when completing treatments (face shield, type II medical mask, apron, Gloves). This is a mandatory requirement for all students to wear, no exceptions.

WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I BE STUDYING?

VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering (500/8730/7) 

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The programme incorporates demonstration and student participation in a realistic working environment. Within the programme, students receive full support in their skill development and acquisition of competence. Students will be assess through practical observation of skills and questioning. Assessments will be carried out on paying clientele.

WHAT CAN THE COURSE LEAD TO?

Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior barber, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking a Technical Level qualification in barbering at Level 3.

  • Commercial barber shop/salons
  • Specialist African type hair barber shop/salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Product manufacturing and training
