Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This access to further education course is for 16-18 year olds who want to study in an adult environment, in smaller class sizes with specialist teachers to improve their English and/or maths GCSE grades, and who want to study new GCSE subjects to allow them to progress to a range of further education courses including A Levels, BTec courses or apprenticeships.

OUR STUDENTS SAY

The teachers here are sound!

Kym, 17

Do Business; its fun – plus when you do well, you get cake!

Alex, 16

GCSE’s are the key to unlocking your potential.

Kym, 17

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

There will be a short confirmation meeting with the course leader so that you can find out more about the GCSE programme and make sure it is the right course for you.  Applicants may also be required to take our course entry tests in English and maths, and will need to be working at approximately GCSE grade ‘D’ standard.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements for prior qualifications will also be required to produce a short 1,500 word research project in order to be considered by the Deputy Principal for exceptional entry.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

This is an intensive 1-year, full time program which is delivered over four days and is taught by subject specialists teachers in small classes. Most subjects are assessed by two or three examinations at the end of the year and some include elements of coursework.

The GCSE program incorporates a uniquely supportive framework designed so that we can get to know each one of you individually and work with you to develop a wide range of skills and experience which would be of real interest to employers and universities or college in the future. Weekly tutorials, employability workshops and exciting and different enrichment sessions as well as private study support our learners during their time at College.

Examples of the kind of things you could be doing:

IT Practical – Promotional VideoMuseum of London day trip
First Aid TrainingIntroduction to BTEC qualifications
Art Practical – Lino printingVisiting speakers
An introduction to ArchaeologyBushcraft session
How to write a CVArt Practical – Photograms
Zoo tripIntroduction to Politics
Introduction to VolunteeringStudy skills workshop

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Students should take a minimum of four subjects including maths and/or English– so if you are just doing English, for example, you will be able to do three others.

If you are doing maths and English then choose two additional GCSE subjects. Some students may wish to take 5 subjects in total. Alongside maths GCSE and/or English GCSE, you will have a choice of two or three subjects. All the subjects have been specifically chosen to be new and fresh for you.

You may choose from:

  • Business Studies
  • Biology
  • Classics (Ancient History and Archaeology)
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

This course will give you a range of options after the year to progress into further education, and is suitable for students who wish to progress to Level 3 courses including A Levels at a school, BTEC courses or vocational or leadership courses at The College.
