Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

The Intermediate Football Coaching Programme is run in conjunction with Portsmouth In The Community. The programme will cover theoretical and practical aspects of sport coaching and fitness, and develop your understanding of the leisure industry. You will also have the chance to develop practical coaching experience by assisting with community football programmes run by Portsmouth across the Island.


This course is for anyone who is interested in starting a career in the sport and fitness industry. Students who are interested in both academic and practical studies will do well on the programme.


This is an opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in sport, coaching, and the leisure industry. The programme will also cover employability skills, to prepare learners for future careers.

On the Level 2 course you will gain a wide range of skills including how to:

  • Design and conduct training/exercise sessions for a variety of age groups
  • how to conduct consultations, inductions and facility walk-through’s
  • how to instruct a variety of exercise sessions
  • anatomy and physiology covering the heart and circulatory system, the respiratory system, structure and function of the skeleton, musculoskeletal system, postural and core stability, the nervous and energy systems and their relation to exercise
  • Identify personal development opportunities in football including administration and officiating.
  • Promote and establish working relationships between players, coaches, parents and officials.
  • Safely organise and supervise activities
  • Understand different aspects of coaching
  • employment law, industry specific legislation and procedures that apply to their jobs
  • an understanding of the Principles of Customer Service and maximising the Customer experience

You will be assessed by a mixture of written projects and assignments and practical assessment. You will also be required to pass a practical gym coaching session.


Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Maximising the customer experience in a gym environment
  • Supporting client health and wellbeing
  • Conducting client consultations and gym inductions
  • Planning and reviewing gym-based exercise programmes
  • Instructing and supervising gym-based exercise programmes


Your course will include functional skill modules or GCSE classes to help you develop these essential skills. You will be assessed, and will attend both of the following modules.

  • English
  • Maths


Students who successfully complete this course and who also have GCSE Maths and English at C (Grade 4) or above can progress onto the Level 3 Football Coaching Programme at the College, or other sport and fitness related courses, employment or apprenticeships. Successful students could also progress into entry-level employment in the leisure or football industries, and could play a substantial role in community football coaching.


All full time students pay a resource fee plus approx. £200 for a Portsmouth In The Community Kit Pack which all learners who are part of the football squads are required to purchase.
