Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.


Minimum of Grade 4 (C) in Maths and English and have successfully completed and Intermediate level Engineering qualification.


This is an advanced level course plus craft skills at an enhanced enrichment level or the opportunity to gain the enrichment qualification.

Essential requirement are student’s ability, enthusiasm, initiative and drive to obtain a valuable qualification in order to progress an engineering Career. Academically a student must have obtained: four GSCE passes including maths and English or successful completion and tutor recommendation from an Intermediate Engineering course.


Engineering is a growth industry and is said to be a leading light for the UK and rest of the world. If you want to be part of a collective of professionals who will help change our world for the better, then this course is for you. This can mean you wish to progress into various fields such as marine, mechanical or electronic engineering.

This course can provide opportunities, whether it be seeking employment or going to university.


You will study several disciplines across engineering which will include both theoretical and practical work. Most importantly as you develop your skill set you will have the opportunity to focus your skills and develop specialisms, meaning you can build your portfolio for working life, or get a taste of what you may wish to study at university.

Engineering is a diverse subject; we aim to prepare you for the world of work or progression onto university. Some topics are essential such as health and safety, science and mathematics.


The engineering team will undertake to formulate direct links with industry for each students which may result in work experience, mentor support and ultimately can aid in gaining employment or progression to apprenticeships.


You will attend college for two days a week. Each day is usually from 9.00am until 4.30pm.

We think it is best to give you a range of teaching methods, you will do some work in classrooms; however this is to give you the supporting theory so that you can apply it when you move into our practical workshops. The workshop areas are designed to ensure you know how to work in real engineering environments. You will be using equipment that is specialised, something that other students will only dream of using!

All units are internally assessed and graded by your tutors, so no need to worry about pinning all of your study on one 3 hours exam. Instead you are assessed continually so that you can improve yourself and ensure you will be the best candidate for anything you wish to do after the course, whether it be getting a job or going to university.


As part of your programme of study you may be expected to attend an external work placement for 50 working days each year.
This will give you occupationally specific training focussed on developing practical and technical skills in the workplace.


This course is perfectly suited to someone who wishes to enter the field of engineering. We aim to prepare you to work in industry by utilising our tutors’ knowledge and working with leading manufacturers and engineering companies who are both local and global.

We feel the right balance of theory and practical work will provide great opportunities in terms of employability or progression.


Students are required to purchase standard study materials and uniform.  Students may also be required to contribute to the cost of trips to the mainland.
