Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is focussed on providing essential skills to ensure Readiness for the Workplace, and progression to higher levels of study. It has been endorsed by the Island’s Digital Island programme as part of their key priorities.

The course is structured around a set of project modules aimed at providing core knowledge and skills desired by employers.

Students will study the course for one year or two years depending on individual needs.

03Programming skills
04 Website design
05 Database fundamentals
06Fundamentals of computer games design
07 Core skills in robotics programming
08 Portfolio development

Assessment will take place in partnership with key Island employers using  a range of practical tasks, including ‘mock’ interviews

PREPARING FOR WORK

The TechBac programmes place heavy emphasis on you getting the skills that you will need when you enter employment.

Provision will be made within the program to allow for work experience for all learners. This placement will be arranged by the learners and will not have to be within an IT environment specifically.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

As part of this course you will attend 1 lesson per week in one of the following subjects;

  • English
  • Maths

These classes will be with subject specialists and delivered at a level to suit you.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

This course is offered in conjunction with Functional Skills. These qualifications aim to develop skills valued by employers.

HOW IS IT STUDIED?

This qualification is based around academic (written) and practical tasks, and will involve significant hands on experience in the college’s well equipped hardware and networking labs.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed by completing an online test and an assignment designed to confirm your skills in all of the units of your course. These are formal assessments created by City & Guilds.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

This course can lead to the Advanced Technical Certificate in Digital Skills and may be of particular value in preparation for completion of an Apprenticeship programme.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

All students will formally develop skills in English, Maths and Information Communication Technology as part of the course.
