Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

The interview process will involve Maths and English assessment along with an informal discussion with one of the team members, the whole process should take no longer than three hours.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

  • For those wishing to raise their basic skill level in literacy and numeracy to progress onto trade level construction courses.
  • For those who wish to test their aspirations for working within the construction industry.

This course will introduce you to a range of construction trades.

WHY EMBARK ON A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION?

  • There is a predicted short fall of approximately 15,000 people per year in the South East in the construction industry according to sector skills councils.
  • The most significant shortage is in wood occupations.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

English and Maths, based upon the principles needed in the construction industry.

Site carpentry including:

  • Door hanging
  • Kitchen fitting
  • Basic roofing
  • Straight flight of stairs

Work Experience

Work placements and any work experience are highly desirable but subject to availability.  All candidates are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to gain purposeful work experience during their course.  We will do all we can to assist in finding suitable opportunities.

The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 36 hours of work experience within the academic week.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

You will learn in a friendly supportive environment to build your confidence and ability in basic number, communication and hand skills.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

This course on completion can lead to other Advanced Technical courses in Construction in to a sole trade area or onto a Technical Maintenance Operations qualification.

Dependent on a successful interview. (in the longer term you may become one of the 370,000 new entrants to the industry who will be needed to replace those who will retire or leave in the next few years)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Essential Equipment required:

  • Safety footwear incorporating steel toecaps (£30.00 approx.)
  • Work trousers (overalls as protective clothing) (£25.00 approx.)
