The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.
There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.
The interview process will involve da Maths and English assessment along with an informal discussion with one of the team members, the whole process should take no longer than three hours.
The qualifications are aimed at people wishing to learn some skills in bricklaying, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.
Another important feature of the Diploma’s is that it provides a progression route towards achieving a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2. Units within a Diploma route relate to the units within the relevant construction NVQ. NVQ in Trowel Occupations Level 2 is for either new entrants to the industry or mature applicants working within the construction industry wishing to become trade qualified. An NVQ requires a candidate to be working in the industry to provide evidence to support its achievement.
Technical qualification allows candidates to learn, develop and practise and further the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Bricklaying.
A technical qualification is considered to be the industry standard. Obtaining this level can lead to a career as a bricklayer.

Work placements and any work experience are highly desirable but subject to availability. All candidates are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to gain purposeful work experience during their course. It is not realistic for the College to be expected to find all trainees a placement, though we will do all we can to assist in finding suitable opportunities. The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 40 hours of work experience within their academic week.
The College can offer a variety of additional qualifications and activities beyond the core course requirements. All students are invited to complete additional qualifications.
Typically attendance will be required for 3 days. The qualification for this course will be a Brickwork Diploma Award.
To gain the award candidates have to be successful in all units and the phase test but each unit they achieve will be recorded. They must also pass a separate knowledge test.
The course is structured and delivered by continuous assessment but includes phase testing of practical ability and knowledge areas in each unit It will be your responsibility to update your record book which will show evidence of your experience and achievements. The Certificate is awarded on completion of all units and achievement of the health and safety and Principles online exam.
