ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of three GCSEs grade 2/E or equivalent including English Language.

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

Applications which do not meet the stated entry criteria in full may be approved as an exceptional entry, based on a review by the Assistant Principal

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

Anyone wishing to gain an introduction to the world of Hair and Beauty Therapy, that may wish to take up a junior position in the industry or progress to Level 2 in Beauty or Level 1 in Hair.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Skills and knowledge that are needed to start a career in Beauty. Subjects include: Literacy and Numeracy to support you in the workplace. There are theory and practical based units these include;

  • Reception duties
  • Provide basic manicure
  • Provide basic pedicure
  • Skin care
  • Basic make-up
  • Nail Art
  • Create an image
  • Themed Face painting

The introduction to Hair and Beauty Therapy skills also includes learning about professional presentation, working with others, reception skills, health and safety in the workplace, and presenting a professional image within a salon.

PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION

All students are required to:

  • Wear a course uniform (Purchased by yourself via the college)
  • Wear full black covered shoes
  • Have hair fully up and off the face for all sessions within the salons
  • Wear no Jewellery ( a wedding band can be worn)
  • Not have nail extensions or polish on. Short filed nails essential to carry out treatments

CURRENT LEGISLATION IN RELATION TO CLOSE CONTACT WORKING

Full PPE must be worn when completing treatments (face shield, type II medical mask, apron, Gloves). This a mandatory requirement for all students to wear, no exceptions.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The course is delivered by specialist staff, which possess industry experience along with specialist qualifications. Teaching sessions incorporate a mixture of activities to ensure students develop skills and knowledge.

Students are assessed through a combination of internally assessed coursework, practical skills and externally assessed examinations. This helps students to develop core skills required for the industry which include the ability to meet deadlines and retention of knowledge as well as application of skills.

As an essential part of learning all students will be expected to receive and complete treatments (unless medically exempt) within the practical session from peers.
