You will be invited into college for an interview. The interview is a two way process and it will allow you to ask any questions that you may have regarding the course. You will be required to bring into college a portfolio of photography work that you feel relevant for the tutor to see. The portfolio could include:

  • Your GCSE/AS Level Art work.
  • Work you have done in your own time.
  • If you cannot take these out of school, then take photos of some of the best pages.  We want to see how you think about and record your ideas.
  • Include some drawing – this can be drawings of anything such as still life, family.
  • If you have any photography, work include this.
  • If you have 3D work or work that is too large or delicate to bring in, take photos of it.

The portfolio can be hard copies or digital copies on a USB or website/Instagram account

We suggest you have at least 10 pieces of work to show the tutor, they will ask you questions about your choice.

You will be working in a mature, creative and exciting environment of art and design at The Isle of Wight College. You will study in a new purpose built art design and media block, with up-to-date facilities which include spacious multi-purpose studios and an industry equipped Apple Mac Suite.

Building from the core units, you will be prepared during your first year to start to take more responsibility over your educational direction in the second year, through set projects and direct guidance.

All the projects are justified with an industrial context to them, allowing us to develop your understanding of the industry while developing your design skills, and gaining a recognised national qualification.

Practical and theoretical work is integrated throughout the course with individual project work forming a large part of your studies, supported by workshops, lectures, demonstrations and tutorials.  Functional Skills opportunities for development are clearly in-bedded within the main set work for the qualification as are additional studies and qualifications.

Your programme of study will include qualifications in:

This is an exciting and dynamic general art and design course aiming at developing the student through the fundamental basics of art and design and introducing them to a range of design disciplines.  These could include areas such as graphics, photography, textiles, fashion, 3D design and illustration.  The course builds upon the use of drawing, visual communication, experimentation of media, materials and techniques, the generation of ideas and concepts and the influence of historical and contemporary references.  We encourage and develop creative independence through sound methods used throughout history and industry.  This course allows students to have a greater choice in their areas of progression by being broad based, and prepares them for entering into Higher Education or employment.

To gain your Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design you will need to pass all set units, (these comprise of mandatory, specialist and professional). Assessment is continuous and is formalised at three set stages throughout the academic year, which is discussed with students.

The qualification is course work based with a Final MajorProject at the end of the second year, which is a summative body of work demonstrating your abilities and understanding of your chosen specialist pathway prior to completion of the qualification.

All work is internally assessed and sampled by a second independent assessor, finally moderated by the awarding body for agreement of grade and award.
