The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.
There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.
Access to HE is a full level 3 Diploma course, which is specifically designed to enable mature (19+) learners to prepare to take, and to progress to university degree level programmes. Thousands of mature learners in the UK progress from Access courses to Higher Education programmes each year. The standard entry requirements for the Access to Higher Education course are GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C/4 or above plus a commitment to learn.
The College has run an Access to HE programme for many years; our students are highly successful, and the great majority (95% in recent years) complete the course and achieve their Diploma.

At the College, all Access students study 4 subjects full-time. They also study a compulsory Academic Study Skills module. These five elements make up your Access to Higher Education Diploma.
We offer five different Access Diplomas. The possible subject choices for each of these are set by QAA, the agency that assures the quality of Higher Education in the UK.
Diploma 2: Health & Social Care Professions
The College’s Access Diploma is a full-time programme. Students study in College for between 3 and 4 days a week. Currently, teaching sessions take place during the day, between 9.15am and 4.15pm.

Yes. However, because of the demands of the course, Access to HE learners are advised to work in employment for no more than 18 hours a week during term time.

The Access programme is fully funded for learners who are aged 19-23, do not already have a full level 3 qualification, and who have been resident in the UK for at least the last 3 years. Learners who meet these residency criteria, but have a full level 3 qualification, are eligible to apply for the Advanced Learner Loan.
Learners who are over 19 years of age with full level 3 or who are 24 years or older at the start of their course, and who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years, are eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.
Under this scheme, it is possible for learners who meet certain performance criteria to gain full funding of all Access to HE tuition fees. Please contact us for further information.

If you meet the entry criteria, you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible after applications open (From November of each year). Please think carefully about the financial and time management implications of taking this course before applying.
All applicants must meet the academic entry criteria above, in addition, they must successfully complete an interview.
Candidates who are called to interview are asked to complete and submit a short personal statement, explaining why they wish to take the course, and a short essay.
Both must meet a minimum standard.
