The Match Report – Portsmouth College Vs Isle Of Wight College

By Henry Wollweber

On the 10th November the Isle of Wight College lined up an away fixture against Portsmouth College after loosing 5-1 to Buckswood School a couple weeks prior. The team headed down to Furze Lane 3G pitch for an 11am kick off.

In the first half there was not much to separate the two teams with both sides having chances throughout it. The away side defended well with Portsmouth College struggling to break down the new 5 at the back system that they have adopted. In the 30th minute the Isle of Wight College put pressure on the home sides defense forcing a corner. Dan Johnson took the corner with his left foot swinging it into the box to find Rowenn Churchill who had just enough time too take the ball down and placed it into the top left corner to put the away side 1-0 up. For the rest of the half there was a few chances for both sides with Connor Coburn winning a free kick on the edge of the box which was lined up by Cory Sanderson and saved by the home sides keeper and a penalty shout by Cian McGee was turned away by the referee with a few good saves from Andrew Morey to prevent any goals from the home side.

In the second half the team lined up with the same 5 at the back system but with a few changed due to injuries. The home side seemed more up for it and were pushing the away team more and more until in the 55th minute the home side played a ball behind the defense and the ball was then played into an unmarked forward in the middle of the box to tap it in to make the game 1-1. Then just about 5 minutes later on in the match they added another goal to put the home side ahead for the first time in the match after this goal went in many of the Isle of Wight College players lost the intensity level. With this happening and another injury, the home side added another two goals to there 2-1 lead to make it 4-1. After the 4th goal had gone in the back 5 system then changed to a back 4 for the final 20 minutes of the match which worked well and hard but no more clear chances came for either side for the rest of the game as the game finished 4-1 to Portsmouth College.

The Isle of Wight College worked hard in this match but still have work to be done to improve their game. And can build of this result going into the next matches.
