We've been talking to some of our apprentices this week to give you an insight into what it's like.

This short interview is with Josh Coates who is currently at Williams Shipping...

What Apprenticeship are you enrolled on?

Workboat Crew Member Level 3

What new skills and knowledge have you gained within the apprenticeship?

Within my time at Williams Shipping, I have learnt valuable skills which help me on my day to day and will further my career later on. I have accomplished Powerboat level 2, SEC (communication with others within the waters of Southampton and Portsmouth)

With my slinger signaller certificate, I assist and direct the crane with a variety of lifts, such as radars for super yachts, wind turbine blades, food and supplies for oil tanker.

I have also completed Aec 1&2, which is my favourite ticket. Using this training I complete servicing on various vessels in our fleet alone and do daily/ weekly checks as well.

What have you particularly enjoyed within the apprenticeship?

Within the apprenticeship I have particularly enjoyed working with my colleagues and making new friends in and out of work. The ability to manoeuvre boats and direct the crane are another thing I enjoy.

The gallery below shows the type of tasks the Workboat Crew member role involves. These photos include another of our apprentices, Jamie Gainfort
