Match report – By ANDREW MOREY

On the 19th of January, the Isle of Wight college football team travelled to top of the league Varndean College, situated in Brighton, who we had lost to earlier in the season 3-0 for an away fixture after losing to Worthing College 2 weeks prior.

The start of the first half was one to forget for the island college as Varndean had some good possession and after a good passing play went through on goal and slotted it into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the hosts. As some more time went on, Varndean were playing well with the downhill advantage giving them a bit more of a hand through on goal, until a misfortunate back pass from Joshua Knowles went past the keeper Andrew Morey rebounding off the post for a Varndean player to run through and have the easiest finish of his career. Despite making some mistakes, the Island college defended the rest of the half with great defensive displays, some great saves from the keeper and some very lucky moments as Varndean didn’t take their chances to score more, meaning that the score at half time was 2-0 to the home side with the Isle of Wight college struggling to really create a chance to score.

The second half started as the first half finished with a strong press from the home side with some good attack down the wings playing the ball into the middle, this wasn’t leading to anything until 10 minutes into the second half when they found their striker in the middle who with a great first touch and a great finish scored Varndean’s third goal of the game. Soon after the hosts got a 4th as they got in behind and slotted it past the keeper again. It was the same story after that goal as Varndean got a 5th with a great strike placed perfectly into the bottom corner. The Isle of Wight college struggled to really create anything as Varndean just cut everything out. The hosts got a free kick on the edge of the box, which was struck well but took a lucky deflection off Henry Wollweber in the wall and went into the opposite corner to which the keeper went to, this was Varndean’s 6th goal of the game as they started to show no mercy. Some more solid defensive display from the college stopped any more goals going in until Varndean had the ball on the wing and with a high looping cross, it went over the defense and the keeper for the 7th and final goal of the match, it was an unlucky goal to finish on, but the result was deserved. Isle of Wight college had a few chances late on with 2 corners and our closest chance of the game came from Rowenn Churchill with a snapshot on the edge of the box blazing over the bar bringing an end to the game.

The game finished 7-0 to the hosts but despite the score, the performance was better than our previous game with much better passing and control of the ball. The team can build on from this and move on to the next game and try and get something from it.
