Alice Armfield (18) from Cowes has been named as the Association of Colleges (AoC) Student Photographer of the Year, a national photography competition that recognises the outstanding creative talents of students across the country.

Alice was chosen from more than 700 entries from students all over the country, with a theme of ‘What Matters Most’.

“What Matters Most” – a situational portrait, earning Alice Armfield the prestigious “Student Photographer of the Year” award.

Her situational portrait of a couple was chosen by judge Michael Pritchard, Director General of the Royal Photographic Society.

He said: “I can read multiple layers into this image. At one level, the couple are surrounded by things that matter to them, each other included, but more deeply the image says to me more about their life history together in that environment.”

Alice who entered the competition whilst studying A Level Photography at the Isle of Wight College, said: “It’s really amazing to have won,  I can’t believe it! The college encouraged me to enter and it was really useful for them to be so supportive.”

I am absolutely delighted for Alice.  This is a wonderful achievement and a great accolade for Alice to add to her CV.
We are all very proud and excited for her here at the College

Debbie Lavin CBE, The Isle of Wight College Principal

Talking about the picture, she said: “They are family friends.  They are just really amazing people and have an amazing history together and I wanted to capture that in a photo”.

A very high standard

Martin Doel, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “This year’s entries were of a very high standard with a great sense of creativity and imagination. Alice’s image is well composed and captures what matters most to the subjects in the photo. It is a worthy contender for this national award.”

Alice received her prize of an SLR Nikon camera and £150 vouchers for Bob Books at the AoC Annual Conference and Exhibition in Birmingham.

Alice is now studying BA (Hons) Photography at University of Portsmouth.
