Our Awesome Cultural Heritage

Blog / International

Our Travel and Tourism students have just enjoyed a fantastic week with students from France, Italy, Portugal and Romania as part of a 6 stage European funded Erasmus+ project called “Our Awesome Cultural Heritage…Our Awesome Ties”.

The theme of the week was heritage and festivals and we started with tie-breakers and a visit to Quay Arts centre where students could read about Isle of Wight culture and heritage. They then shared information about festivals in their own country before starting to plan a mini-festival later in the week before going bowling in Ryde.

On Tuesday they visited the Mary Rose in Portsmouth and although some were sea-sick as storm Brendan struck the south coast they enjoyed learning about Tudor history.

On Tuesday our Travel & Tourism students, along with students from Romania, Portugal, Italy & France, were given a tour…

One of the highlights of the week was an opportunity to ask John Giddens questions about the Isle of Wight Music Festival and to learn what it takes to be an event organiser.

His humorous anecdotes inspired them to ask lots of questions.  They were then able to share their experiences with students in their home countries via eTwinning.

The other highlight was a mini festival called “Mockingjoy” which the students had planned in order to share their culture with college staff and students.  Each country provided a sample of their food, music and entertainment and people were able to donate to the victims of the Australian bushfires.

Congratulations to our International and Travel & Tourism students for planning the "Mockingjoy" mini-festival – they raised £120 to donate to the victims of the Australian bushfires.❤️????????????❤️

They managed to raise £120 which included money from the auction of a bottle of wine donated by the Portuguese teachers.

The group then visited Carisbrooke castle where they created displays for Victorian artefacts and decided on some events with a Victorian theme.

Finally, we had a farewell evening with a quiz designed by the Travel and Tourism students and cottage pie and sticky toffee pudding made by our hospitality and catering students in the restaurant.

Many friendships have now been struck and students are looking forward to the next stage of the project in France.
