Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work as an Engineering Apprentice at chargemetrix Ltd., Shanklin.

chargemetrix Ltd. manufactures and sells electronic remote battery and plant monitoring devices to both the leisure market, such as various types of boats and motorhomes, and industrial and plant equipment.

Through state-of-the-art technology and user-friendly graphics, the range of chargemetrix remote monitors and accessories provides up-to-date connectivity with any boat or industrial equipment, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through a smartphone, tablet or personal computer, the remote monitoring system provides accurate reporting on such things as battery charge, temperature, alarms and location every 15 minutes, using an in-built SIM card and via standard communications networks. Customers across the UK and Europe enjoy the ability to check on their boat or equipment from anywhere, and receive immediate warnings and notifications if there is an issue. Automated monitoring and response ensure that the customer’s equipment is healthy & ready to go at all times.

Chargemetrix are now looking for a responsive apprentice to join their friendly team whilst working towards an engineering apprenticeship.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Workshop-based role in their new High Street office in Shanklin
  • Debugging and testing electronics
  • Testing sensors and helping to create ways to read them with their hardware
  • Basic electronics and mechanical assembly
  • Device debugging and technical write-up’s
  • Involvement in creating new electronics hardware and software

Qualifications Required:

GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Standard:

  • Engineering Operative Apprenticeship Standard – option 3 Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required and not previously achieved GCSE grade 4/C or above
  • 12 to 18-month apprenticeship
  • There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, College attendance will contribute but time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted

Working Week:

  • 30 hours per week


£4.30 per hour

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
