Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work for Barton Primary School as a Learning Support Assistant Apprentice.

Rather excitingly, Barton Primary School are looking to recruit THREE new learning support assistant apprentices to start with the school in September 2021.

Located in Newport, Barton Primary School is a co-ed community school on the Isle of Wight. The school provides care and education for boys and girls from 3 – 11 years. As an LSA apprentice, the successful candidates will assist the teacher in the classroom to establish an appropriate learning environment including lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons as appropriate.

 The apprentices will establish productive working relationships with pupils through effective communication and will monitor and evaluate learning and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives, whilst working towards a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • To work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff and within an agreed system of supervision.
  • To implement agreed work programmes with individuals/groups, in or out of the classroom. This could include those requiring detailed and specialist knowledge in particular areas and will involve assisting the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management/ preparation of resources.
  • To carry out any agreed programmes of support devised by other professionals involved (e.g. speech and language, physiotherapy, behaviour management). 
  • Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
  • Work with the teacher to establish an appropriate learning environment including lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons/work plans as appropriate.
  • Monitor and evaluate learning and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives.
  • Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher within your role/responsibility and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents with, or as directed.
  • Administer and assess routine tests and invigilate exams/tests.
  • To coordinate lunch time/break time staff and activities as required or deemed necessary.

  • Good communication skills.
  • Organisation skills.
  • Use of initiative.

Qualifications Required:

GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Standard: 

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard.
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required and if not previously achieved GCSE grade 4 or above.
  • There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted.
  • Attendance at Isle of Wight College as required.

Working Week:

  • 30 hrs per week 
  • Mon-Fri 8:40am-3pm

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. Once qualified and dependant on needs of the school at the time of apprenticeship completion, there may be the potential for a full time LSA post within Barton Primary school or at another school.
