Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work for Solent Autopoint as a Motor Vehicle Apprentice.

Solent Autopoint is a family run business with over 20 years’ experience within the motor trade.

The business pride themselves on providing a professional service with their showroom in Ryde offering a relaxed no-pressure environment to view their range of good quality and clean used cars.

Due to exciting expansion, Solent Autopoint are looking to recruit a self-motivated apprentice to join their friendly team whilst working towards a Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship programme.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Full automotive services and necessary repairs
  • Ordering of Parts
  • Some Forecourt attending
  • Make estimations for the length and costs of specific jobs and advise customers on their importance
  • Brake, clutch and timing belt changes / repairs
  • Engine and gearbox stripping and fitting
  • Diagnosing faults using computer hardware and software
  • Ensure the Automotive Workshop standards are always maintained
  • Some Valeting duties


Personal, Essential Qualities:

  • Due to the nature of the role, it is essential to have a keen interest in vehicle repairs
  • A Driving Licence would be advantageous but not essential if working towards a full licence
  • The business is looking for someone who is self-motivated, a team player, punctual and looking to grow within the company

Qualifications Required:

GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Standard: 

  • Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Standard
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required and if not previously achieved GCSE grade 4 or above
  • There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted

Working Week:

  • 40 hours a week
  • Monday – Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm (1 hour for lunch)
  • Weekly attendance at The Isle of Wight College as part of the course

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
