In June 2020 the three parishes of Newport Minster, St. John’s, Newport and St. Mary’s, Carisbrooke came together to form the new parish of Newport and Carisbrooke.

The aim is for the parish to become a resourcing hub for the island with a focus on:

  • offering a range of worship from traditional to more contemporary
  • excellence in offering baptisms, weddings, and funerals
  • exciting and coordinated work with families and children
  • work in schools provided by a team of lay and ordained people
  • new congregations aimed at young people in their 20s and 30s
  • excellent and impactful pastoral care and social action

This is an exciting new apprenticeship opportunity working within a varied administrative role working alongside staff and volunteers within the parish.

There is tremendous scope for the successful candidate to direct their own learning into specialist areas within their role and church administration whilst working towards the Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship programme.

The specialist areas include; social media, events management, working collaboratively with cultural partners, charitable work and premises/listed buildings.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Operations Manager whose work includes; buildings, finance, giving and fundraising, HR and communications
    • As this is a new role the duties may change as needed to best fit the work of the parish
  • Work alongside the volunteers within the parish, which may include general administration, finance, refreshments and events
  • Respond to enquiries by email, phone or in person, forwarding to the appropriate person when relevant
  • Manage and order supplies
  • Help with meetings/bookings
  • Manage the church filing system and ensure records are kept in an orderly and secure way
  • Assist in the completion of data reporting

?                    Understanding of the Church of England is desirable, but not essential

Qualifications Required:

GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Standard: 

  • Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required and if not previously achieved GCSE grade C/ 4 or above
  • There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted
  • Attendance at Isle of Wight College as required

Working Week:

  • Monday – Friday
  • 30 hours per week


£129.00 per week

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
