Overview of Role

An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day to day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship but all learners will need to complete an initial competency test with an interview by the course learners to select the best level for them. 

Duration

The apprenticeship will typically take between 15 and 18 months to complete.

Delivery

Apprentices will complete work-based learning and will be paid a wage, gaining valuable knowledge and experience. In-house training will be provided by the employer with an Assessor visiting and supporting in the work place. Further training will be provided at the Isle of Wight College, depending on the needs of the learner and the employer. This method of delivery allows for a flexible approach which is tailored to each apprenticeship.

Qualification

Apprentices without English or maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.

Assessment

The apprenticeship will end with an End Point Assessment (EPA). This measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed.

The End Point Assessment consists of:

  • A 3-hour synoptic end-test (40%)
  • A portfolio and reflective discussion (60%)

Career Progression

As well as ensuring full competency as an Assistant Accountant, this standard provides the foundation for progression into a number of career paths in the Accounting sector including Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant.
