Entry requirements

View The Isle of Wight College's standard entry requirements for full-time college courses (depending on the level of the course to be studied).

Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4/C or above normally including Maths and English language; grade 4/C or above in a relevant subject qualification is sometimes required. For progressing students, a minimum of Level 2 course in your chosen subject at Merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2. Progressing students without English or Maths at GCSE grade 4/C will be required to study these as part of their programme of study. Applications which do not meet the stated entry criteria in full may be approved as an exceptional entry, based on a review by the Assistant Principal.

What the interview will involve

You will be sent a career plan prior to your interview date to complete and bring along with you on the day. The interview is a two-way process which will give you the opportunity to discuss the course and suitability with the subject tutor.

What you will learn
  • Consultation support for colleagues on hair services 
  • Cut women's hair to create a variety of looks 
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques 
  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks 
  • Bridal Styling 
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon 
How you will learn
Theory/ Workshop sessions- Here you will receive all the essential underpinning knowledge related to the subject area. These sessions are for delivery and demonstration of the practical skills of your qualification. Salon practical sessions- These are designed salon sessions in which you will gain confidence in working in a real salon environment, working on peers, family and friends. As an essential part of learning all students will be expected to receive and complete treatments (unless medically exempt) within the practical sessions from peers. E-Learning- This session is a computer based class where you will use technology to produce work and study independently, with the support and guidance from your tutor. Please note E-learning will be competed at college. Tutorial Sessions- These are designed to support your individual academic progress, and to monitor your course progression by way of action planning and review.
Progression
  • Work in commercial salons, destination/day spas, cruise ships, theatres, airlines or hotel chains 
  • Start your own hairdressing business

City and Guilds level 3 Certificate in women’s hairdressing

Professional presentation? 

All students are required to:? 

  • Wear a course uniform (purchased by yourself via the college)? 
  • Wear full black covered shoes? 
  • Present yourself in a professional capacity, relating to industry standards? 
  • Have hair fully up and off the face for all sessions within the salons? 
  • Wear no jewellery (a wedding band can be worn)? 
  • No nail extensions or nail polish.?
